Protect your family, remove hexavalent chromium from your water
The problem of water pollution is one that has been around for ages. Many civilizations ago, contaminated water that harbored dangerous germs was among the most notorious killers of man. With advances in modern science and technology, it appears that the problem of biological contaminants in our water is now history. But that doesn’t mean we have nothing to worry about. The improper disposal of industrial waste has made our waters even more dangerous and it would shock you to know that the water you termed ‘potable’ could have devastating effects on your health and that of your family members. Our ignorance of the problem appears even more dangerous than the problem and relevant government agencies have also exploited the ignorance of the populace by failing to pay adequate attention.
What should I be concerned about?
There are numerous industrial wastes that could pose a threat to your health and that of your family. One of the most dangerous, and unfortunately, one of the most commonly found contaminants is hexavalent chromium (Chromium 6). This element is capable of causing devastating cancers and the burden of treatment lies on the victim and not the party responsible for the pollution.
What are the health effects of hexavalent chromium?
Chromium 6 is a known carcinogen (a substance that can cause cancer) and it’s also known for affecting the reproductive health of men and women alike. People are exposed to the substance through contact with the skin, ingestion, and inhalation. At first, it appeared that the devastating health effects are only caused through inhalation but numerous studies have proven that ingestion of quantities that were considered insignificant, such as those found in drinking water, poses a health hazard. Exposure to hexavalent chromium is also known to cause asthma attacks, anemia, bleeding gut, ulcers, convulsions, organ damage, among other devastating effects.
Source of hexavalent chromium
Hexavalent chromium is generated as a byproduct of various industrial processes. Power plants and coolants are among the major industrial sources of hexavalent chromium. Additionally, chromium 6 is passed into our water through paint and dye pigments, chrome plating wastes, wood preservatives, leaching from waste sites, etc.
A public health tussle
California appears to be the only state in America that has shown some concern about this issue. The California Office of Health Hazard Assessment set a public health goal about 7 years ago. The goal required that the amount of Chromium 6 in drinking water should be less than 0.02 parts per billion. It is thought that this is the minimum concentration that can be considered safe for the public. But the concerned industries have paid little attention so far. The state made a move by enacting restrictions but the state limit was put at a weak 10 parts per billion. To put this into context, the state limit is 500 times the recommended limit. Thus, the danger of hexavalent chromium is still very much alive.
The Environmental Protection Agency has been slower in its own response. The agency is expected to publish the results of its safety reviews and accompanying guidelines but bureaucracy and pressure from the polluting industries have stalled the process. No one knows exactly when the safety laws that are expected to protect the citizens would be passed.

A need to protect yourself
Since it appears that government agencies haven’t shown the desired level of concern, you need to protect yourself and your family from chromium 6 poisoning. The current regulatory standard is 100 parts per billion, and this law was enacted to protect people from the skin irritation that results from contact with hexavalent chromium. Further studies have shown that this limit is grossly inadequate as ingesting even smaller amounts could lead to many health problems.
You should also know that chromium 6 contamination is quite common in our drinking water. A survey carried out by the EPA showed that more than 75% of the water systems that supply drinking water to Americans contain hexavalent chromium. This means that an overwhelming majority of Americans are in danger of Chromium 6 ingestion.
